General Description of Varadero
Was the poet lying when he declared “E blanc, A vert, O bleu, voyelles”? Or did he stay in Varadero and realize that its three vowels evoke the white of its sands, the blue of its seas, and the green of its vegetation? All we know is that he ended up selling rifles in Africa and probably evoked, unknowingly (or knowingly?), the concept of a universal beach, since when we talk about a beach in Cuba, we are talking about Varadero par excellence, just as we can mention a poet without calling him Rimbaud.
Varadero is the ultimate tourist destination of Cuba and it's so strategically important that, despite the fact that it should be part of the Cárdenas municipality, a city with lot of history in the Matanzas province south to Varadero, it's a special municipality in its whole, whose access was restricted and only recently the legal house rental was permitted.
The blue beach of Cuba is located at about two hours from Havana, it has an international airport and it is, without a doubt, the tourist capital of Cuba, even more than Old Havana, with his 20 kilometers of uninterrupted beach. These 20 km are full of hotels, tourist structures, shopping centers, restaurants and amusements. Everything under the green, the blue and the white, the three primary colors of its nice landscape. Varadero also dispose of 23 golf sites, it's the cradle of kitesurfing and the only place of Cuba where you can find an official school of this beautiful sport, lots of diving sites, a national aquarium, a natural park and an amusement park. Varadero also has ten virgin islands, several marine flora and 40 types of corals, so it's an amazing place for diving enthusiasts.
What the name of Varadero means? Where it comes from?
There are two versions about the name of Varadero. According to some people, it is called like that because during the "norths" (front cold which cause constant winds from north during the Cuban winter), the boat stranded in the sandbanks, which were called varabanes, plural of "varabán", where the Varadero name come from, which literally mean "huddle of varabanes". According to the second version, sailors used these sandbanks to beach a boat that needed to be repaired or maintained. Thus, in this case Varadero would mean place to beach the boats.
Both versions refer to sandbanks, the famous "varabanes", which are very typical of Varadero.
Additional Characteristics of Varadero
Since its discovery, Varadero never stopped to be popular. At the beginning it was the preferred place by the Cuban millionaires and there is an anecdote about the Xanadú manor, a very luxury villa which was built by the American billionaire of French origin Dupont de Neumours. This manor and its ground comprise all the area where the Varadero Golf Club, the Plaza las Américas the Meliá las Américas hotel and the manor itself are now located. Since the Cuban Revolution, the manor was confiscated and opened to the public. Today it consists in the Las Américas restaurant, a bar and a little hotel. It's about the most dramatic and famous confiscation in the post-revolutionary Cuba. It's said that Dupont died the day where the Las Américas restaurant was inaugurated.
Varadero is divided in two areas, an urban zone and an hotel zone, much like it happen in Cancun, but in a minor measure because in the Varadero case, the zones are more strictly related and there is not a clean separation between them. The urban zone begins with an iron bridge, which is the official entry of Varadero and consists in 65 streets connected by one avenue of 5 kilometers, the Primera avenue. In these 65 streets is where almost all the commercial, recreational and night life of Varadero is concentrated. Next, it come the Kawama area, which is the famous hotel zone, where most of the all inclusive hotels are located. In this area, reserved to the tourism, no Cuban was allowed to enter before the year 2008.
Finally, at the extreme east of Varadero, which is called "la punta" (the tip), there are eleven square kilometers of virgin zone, where almost no hotel is constructed, since this area was declared as an ecological reserve. This is the only area where you can enjoy of an uncontaminated and wild nature.
Varadero has a lot of attractions, but the major one is the beach. Since the Dupont Manor to the more oriental tip, there are 11 kilometers of beach accessible to anyone. Other places of interests are located in this area such as Plaza de las Américas, a place containing several restaurants, a big supermarket, several handicraft, souvenirs and clothes shops, an international drug store, a SPA, a bank, a telecom office and a car rental agency, among other places. But you can find this kind of places also in the urban zone, and we definitively recommend to visit the whole peninsula, without counting the south coast, where the sea is not as transparent than the north one, but is without a doubt as beautiful.
Our site was probably one of the first managing the home vacation rental in Varadero.
