General Description of Santiago de Cuba
Santiago of Cuba has always culturally been considered as the great rival of Havana, while politically, it was always been reputed as the cradle of the Cuban Revolution. It played a main role in the Fulgencio Batista government overthrowing before the Fidel Castro's government. It was in Santiago where this latter, together with a band of insurrected, attacked the Moncada Quarter, beginning the famous July 26th movement and it was in the Sierra Maestra, a mountain zone of Cuban Orient, where the most part of the Cuban Revolution was realized. Fidel Castro himself, defines Santiago of Cuba as the Revolution heroic city.
Furthermore Santiago of Cuba is the greatest city of Cuba after Havana, without arriving to have the appearance of a big metropolis and keeping a decisive Caribbean aspect. Santiago also keep the influence of French and Haitian cultivators, inherited from the IXXth century. Santiago is also the capital of the ancient Orient province, it has the biggest influence from the Afrocuban culture and its people are vibrant and friendly.
At the beginning, Santiago of Cuba was the capital of Cuba. But, despite of the fact that since 1607, Havana City become the new capital of Cuba, Santiago was never eclipsed by this later, being much more than a simple capital of a province producing sugar and coffee. Santiago is a world apart, a Cuba inside Cuba and its history has nothing to envy to the Havana one.
Reasons to visit Santiago of Cuba are many. You can go to see the carnivals (July, 26th), which are popular everywhere in Cuba, or to visit the Morro Fortress (much more interesting of the fortress with the same name in Havana), to sit down at the base of Sierra Maestra mountains, to make excursions outside the city, such as the sacred El Cobre ot the Gran Piedra, a vast rock area.
