General Description of Playa Girón
Playa Girón is a small beach locality, particularity famous to have marked important steps on the contemporary history of Cuba. It is surrounded by stunning colorful waters. It's part of the oriental margin of the Bay of Pigs, in the Zapata Peninsula, which juts off the southern coasts of Matanzas province. Playa Giron is today a tourist center, the most important one of the region, as much as Boca de Guaná (a resort built to remember an Indian village) and Playa Larga (another wonderful beach).
The zone count with a Museum, several tourist and recreational centers and an hotel, the Cubanacán Playa Girón. It's also an haven for bird watchers. Furthermore Playa Girón is a diving and fishing paradise, it has 12 sites with an excellent visibility.
The Zapata Peninsula is the largest swamp in Cuba and it's almost entirely unhabited. It's one of the biggest and most important ecosystems of the country, by constituting one of the main humidity reserves of the Caribbean. In 2001, it was declared by the UNESCO as biosphere reserve. It is definitively one of the most searched places in relation to beaches, uncontaminated spots, to natural and unusual tourism and water sports, especially the diving. It's definitively a natural tourism paradise but beware, thousand of mosquitos have the same opinion and they will eat you, so bring plenty of repellent, because this product is generally not available in Cuba.
The best time to visit Playa Girón is all along the year, but sail, windsurf and kitesurf lovers should go there between April and May, when the south winds are most strong and frequent.
In Playa Girón and the Zapata Peninsula in general there are a few casas particulares for vacation rental and they are generally near to the respective hotels. If you rent a private home, in order to get there, you will generally need a taxi, a Viazul bus or you have to rent a car, because public transportation is lacking.
